KingCo Playoffs - Tuesday Recaps

KingCo 3A - First Round
Liberty 7, Mercer Island 2 - The Patriots jumped out on MI starter Hunter Goldberg, scoring six times in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 7-2 win over the Islanders in the first game of the KingCo 3A tournament. Ben Wessel started and worked 5 solid innings, allowing 2 earned while striking out 6. Liberty was led offensively by Nick Short, who went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI. Wessel and Jalen Mano added two hits a piece for the Pats, who advance to the 3A semi-finals to take on top-seeded Mount Si on Thursday night at 7:00 PM. Junior Alex Himstead drove in both Mercer Island runs and Matt Orehek added two hits of his own, as the Islanders season ends with a record of 8-13.

Bellevue 3, Juanita 2 - Senior Michael Raine outdueled junior Sean Brennan, as the Wolverines fought off a game Juanita team, 3-2. Raine worked five strong innings, allowing just two Rebel runs before making way for Trent Ishii, who pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to record the save. Brennan was the tough luck loser, allowing three runs in his four innings of work. Bellevue advances to Thursday's semi-finals where they will take on Lake Washington, a team they split the regular season with. Juanita, who started just one senior on Tuesday, sees its season end with a record of 4-16.

KingCo 4A - Loser Out Games
Inglemoor 7, Bothell 6 - Lucas Wimmer's 2-out walk-off double kept a resilient Vikings team alive, as they ended the season of Northshore rival Bothell, 7-6. Inglemoor trailed 6-5 headed into the 7th, but got a solo home run by Blake Wilson to tie the game and set the stage for Wimmer's heroics. Curtis Bafus also homered for the Viks, with Zach Anderson hitting a solo home run for Bothell. Inglemoor is now two wins away from State, while the defending 4A state champion Cougars end their season with a record of 12-11.

Ballard 6, Newport 4 - Frank Airey doubled twice and drove in 3 runs as the Beavers extended their great season with a 6-4 win over Newport. Joe Jacobson allowed just 1 run in 4 1/3 innings, while Caleb Jaeger picked up the save, recording the final two outs of the game. Ballard will face Inglemoor on Thursday at 4:00 PM for the opportunity to take on the WesCo #3 seed with a trip to State on the line. Newport, who got two hits each from Ioannis Kritsonis, Mason Paul and Jake Rosen, has its season come to an end with a record of 12-10.

KingCo 4A Tournament Results

A quick recap of Saturday's KingCo 4A Tournament results:


Redmond 3, Woodinville 2
- Adam Cline outdueled Marty Luchenbach in a complete game victory, as the Mustangs knocked off the Falcons, 3-2.  Cline allowed just three hits (all to Woodinville shortstop Shea Donlin, who had two doubles and a single) and struck out 5.  Offensively, the 'Stangs were led by Patrick McGrath (2-for-2, 2 RBI) and Brent Firth (solo home run in the 2nd inning).  

Newport 8, Inglemoor 1
- Senior Aaron Sandefur saved his best game for the biggest stage, as he led Newport past the top-seeded Vikings, 8-1.  Sandefur allowed just 6 hits and a run in a complete game win, while also homering and driving in four at the plate.  Mason Paul chipped in with two RBI and Ioannis Kritsonis was 2-for-4 with a stolen base for the Knights, who advance to the KingCo semi-finals to take on Crest Division foe Redmond on Monday at 4:00 PM.  Inglemoor will face Northshore rival Woodinville in a loser-out game Monday afternoon at Inglemoor HS.

Issaquah 6, Ballard 1
- The Eagles became the third straight Crest division team to win on Saturday, as they scored three runs in the first and didn't look back in a 6-1 win over Ballard.  Brandon Mahovlich was the winning pitcher, allowing just an unearned run on 3 hits while striking out 9 Beavers in the contest.  Ethan Kalin was the offensive star for Issy, going 3-for-4 with a triple, home run, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.  Ballard was led by Ben Welch, who was 2-for-3 on the afternoon.

Bothell 5, Skyline 4
- The Cougars used a five-run fifth inning to stun the top-seeded Spartans, 5-4.  Travis Dohr pitched five shutout innings in relief of starter Brady Mickelson to earn the win, with Camden McLeod slamming the door over the final 1 2/3 innings for the save.  Skyline took an early lead with four runs in the top of the first, but couldn't push any more runs across. Sam Lee drove in two runs for the Cougars, who will take on Issaquah on Monday night at 7:00 PM at Woodinville HS.  Skyline, who got doubles from Clayton Huber, Brandon Fischer and Jim Sinatro, will play Ballard on Monday at 7:00 PM in a loser-out game at Inglemoor HS.

KingCo 3A Baseball - Players of the Week
Week 5: April 30 - May 5, 2012

Player of the Week: Andy Cosgrove, Soph., Juanita
Sophomore catcher Andy Cosgrove picks up Juanita's first award of the year, winning KingCo 3A Player of the Week for the final two games of the regular season. The young backstop went 5-for-8 on the week, doubling twice and driving in three runs. He also threw out four would be base stealers. Cosgrove finished his sophomore campaign batting .408 with 7 doubles, a home run and 7 RBI.

Pitcher of the Week: Trevor Lane, Sr., Mt Si
Another week, another award for a Mount Si pitcher. Trevor Lane once again wins the award for the season's final week for his performance against Interlake. The southpaw allowed just two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings, striking out an amazing 17 batters (of a possible 19 outs) in a KingCo Championship clinching win. Lane finished the year with a 2.25 ERA in 6 starts, with 67 strikeouts against just 11 walks in 37 1/3 innings.
