Team Capsules (listed alphabetically)
Bellevue Wolverines
Head Coach:
Pete Wilkinson (1st year)
2011 Summary: 7-7 KingCo (T-3rd in KingCo), 10-11 overall, lost in first round on KingCo playoffs

Returning starters: Jack Carlson (Sr - 2B/OF), Connor Foreman (Sr - SS/P), Jack Meggs (Jr - OF/P), Jack Perkins (Sr - OF/P), Drew Quinlan (Sr - OF/P), Michael Raine (Sr - P/UTIL), Jake VanWolvelaere (Sr - P/1B)

Top newcomers: Mason Adams (Jr - 3B/P), Greg Bennett (OF/SS), Reid Hartmann (Jr - C), Chandler Hawk (Soph - IF), Trent Ishii (Sr - P), Beau Jack (Jr - 2B/LF), Robby Lundquist (Fr - C), Jack Moore (Jr - IF), Freddy Moss (Jr - OF/1B), Teddy Rou (Jr - 1B/P), Aaron Saathoff (Jr - C), Nolan Watson (Jr - 3B/P)

Season Outlook from Coach Wilkinson: We bring back 6 regulars from a team that competed for the top spot in the league for half the season in 2011. There is pitching depth and a very solid outfield. We must prove ourselves in the middle infield and at catcher, and we must be able to compete at the top end of the pitching staff if we’re to make a run at a Conference title. Team speed is good. Offensive production is the biggest question mark from 2011. The group is athletic, versatile, and hungry.

Interlake Saints
Head Coach:
Marc Linn (2nd year)
2011 Summary: 8-6 KingCo (3rd in KingCo 3A), 13-11 overall, lost to eventual State champion Burlington-Edison 3-2 in 9 innings at Regionals

Returning starters: Austin Strother (Jr - P/DH), Sam Finfer (Jr - C), Jake Wilson (Sr - OF), Carl Snaring (Sr - P/OF), Joey Button (Sr - OF)

Top newcomers: Henry Lin (Soph - P/IF), Nate Wehner (Soph - P), Jihad Mardini (Jr - OF), Jason Sass (Soph - P/IF)

Season Outlook from Coach Linn: Our health is going to be the Key. We are not a deep team but we do return several players from the team that advanced to the regional tournament a year ago. Our Pitching will be the strength of our team once again. Our offense must be able to generate more run support for our Pitchers this season to be successful. We are going to ask players to step into more of a leadership role this season since eight seniors graduated last year. The nice situation is players know the expectations this season compared to a year ago with a new coaching staff.

Juanita Rebels
Head Coach:
Sherman Leach (2nd year, 3-17 career record)
2011 Summary: 3-11 KingCo (Last in KingCo 3A), 3-17 overall

Returning starters: Conner Jackson (Sr - P/UTIL)

Other returners: Sean Brennan (Jr - P/OF), Avery Britton (Jr - OF/P), Taylor Dantini (Sr - OF/P), Ty Eng (Jr - P/OF)

Season Outlook from Coach Leach: A nice core group of arms give optimism to the Juanita program this season. With only five seniors and three sophomores, it will be a young, but athletic group. The first week will be a strong indicator of what’s to come for the Rebels.

Lake Washington Kangs
Head Coach:
Derek Bingham (8th year, 106-57 career record)
2011 Summary: 8-5 KingCo (2nd in Crown division), 13-11 overall, lost in KingCo championship game, advanced to State tournament, lost to Hanford at Regionals

Season Outlook from Coach Bingham: The Kangs enter 2012 looking to build of a strong finish to last season’s campaign. While we lost a good bit of talent to graduation last year, a solid core returns including five starters from a year ago. We will be talented but inexperienced on the mound, with Zach Johnson the only player on the roster to pitch any KingCo innings in 2011. A strong junior class along with the solid seniors that return have the Kangs setting their sights on competing for a KingCo championship and a return to the State tournament.

Liberty Patriots

Baseball Just Around the Corner

Exactly two weeks from today, high schools across the state of Washington will begin preparing for the 2012 baseball season. The first day of spring sports is Monday, February 27th with jamborees and non-league contests starting the weekend of March 10th. League play for the KingCo 4A conference kicks off on Tuesday, March 20th, while 3A starts play the week of April 2nd.

The league looks strong as usual, fresh off a banner year in 2011. Always considered one of the strongest conferences in the state, KingCo proved that sentiment again last season. The 4A league saw two of its teams in the final four (Redmond & Bothell), with the Bothell Cougars taking home the WIAA state championship. KingCo 3A is also home to the defending 3A state champion Mount Si Wildcats, who topped Shorewood in a dramatic title game at Cheney Stadium last May.

It promises to be another exciting year of KingCo baseball - be sure to check back with the blog in the next few weeks for updates, team previews and other interesting tidbits about the upcoming baseball season!

Top newcomers: Zach Anderson (Jr - 1B), Rex Carlin (Jr - P/OF), Zach Farmer (Sr - OF), Nik Gray (Jr - OF), Eric Gregory (Sr - OF), Jordan Johnson (Sr - C), Samuel Lee (Soph - C), Brady Mickelson (Jr - 2B/P), Mark Woods (Jr - SS)

Season Outlook from Coach Moody: Bothell returns a solid group of infielders and a couple of starting pitchers from last year. We hope to compete good enough to make the Kingco playoffs and with any luck move on to the state tournament.

Garfield Bulldogs
Head Coach: Chris Moedritzer (1st year head coach after 3 years as assistant)
2010 Summary: 5-11 KingCo (5th in Crest Division), 8-11 overall

Returning starters: Hayes Gorecki (Soph - P/UTIL), Chandler Honican (Soph - IF), Ruben Palmer (Sr - CF), Spencer Scott (Sr - P/C/3B), John Trupin (Jr - P/1B), Zach Ward (Jr - P/1B/LF)

Other returners: Hank Droege (Jr - P/1B), Liam McFeely (Jr - P/IF), Ian Zapolsky (Sr - P)

Top newcomers: Grant Bronsdon (Jr - OF), Cody Browne (Jr - OF), Valentino Coleman (Sr - P/3B), Collin Evenson (Jr - P/OF), Jordan Gipson (Sr - OF), Sam Kennard (Jr - C/IF), Joe Markman (Sr - C), Ricky Nakamura (Jr - OF/P), Joe Renner (Jr - P/3B), Charlie Tarnoff (Jr - P/IF)

Season Outlook from Coach Moedritzer: The Bulldogs hope to pick up where they left off after a strong finish to the 2010 season. A strong junior class leads the way with 11 Varsity players. Garfield has more pitching depth this year than it has traditionally had in the past, as well as a solid catcher and middle infield anchoring the defense. The offense lost a few big bats to graduation, but the returners have significantly improved their hitting in the offseason. The schedule figures to be different with Garfield switching from the Crest to the Crown division, but the goal of making the Kingco 4Apostseason tournament remains the same.

Inglemoor Vikings
Head Coach: Bryan McNaghten (4th year, 47-27 career record)
2010 Summary: 14-2 KingCo (Crown division champions), 18-5 overall; eliminated in KingCo playoffs

Returning starters: Dustin Doucette (Sr - P), Mitchell Gonsolus (Sr - SS), Emmett Maki (Sr - P/1B), Peter Meuisi (Sr - 3B/OF), Conor Savage (Sr - OF), Obi Taylor (Sr - P/1B), Garrett Vandiver (Sr - OF/2B), Blake Wilson (Jr - C/OF)

Other returners: Alex Morrow (Sr - P/3B), Adam Mosebar (Sr - C)

Top newcomers: Ken Holen (Soph - OF), Sean Howard (Sr - P), Eric Rodgers (Sr - P), Lucas Wimmer (Jr - P/3B)

Season Outlook from Coach McNaghten: Senior led team untested in a couple key spots – success will be determined by ability to fill those spots. Pitching & senior leadership appears to be strengths of the Vikings.

Roosevelt Roughriders
Head Coach: Jason Bowie (4th year)
2010 Summary: 3-13 KingCo (6th in Crown division), 4-16 overall

Returning starters: Blair Davidson (Sr - C), Graylin Derke (Jr - P/3B), David Holt (Sr - P/IF), Tate Maider (Soph - C), Reid Martinez (Sr - P/IF/OF), Tim Moore (Sr - P/IF/OF), Zach Naon (Jr - OF), Cody Shaul (Jr - 1B)

Other returners: Jack Brennan (Sr - OF), Eli Mathieu (Sr - P/2B)

Top newcomers: Spencer Maniccia (Soph - P/1B), Anthony Laguardia (Soph - 2B)

Season Outlook from Coach Bowie: The Riders are welcoming back all three of their starting pitchers from last season. Those pitchers are part of the 8 of 9 overall position players returning from last year as well. Defense and pitching will be the key as the Riders try for their first playoff berth since joining the KingCo in 1997. With some senior leadership and good pitching, Roosevelt has their best chance ever to secure a playoff berth this season.

Woodinville Falcons
Head Coach: Terry Agnew (20th year)
2010 Summary: 8-8 KingCo (3rd place in Crown division), 12-8 overall

Returning Varsity players: Clarke Bader (Jr - C), Shea Donlin (Jr - SS), T.C. Florentine (Jr - OF), Spencer Greer (Jr - P), Ryland Longoni (Sr - OF), Sean Sellers (Sr - 3B), Doug Sullivan (Sr - C/1B), Carl Svanevik (Sr - OF), Beau Vintertun (Jr - 2B)

Season Outlook from Coach Agnew: Woodinville has a good group of players returning to the team this year.

Jamborees, Non-League Games on the Horizon

We are now two weeks into the baseball season, which means it is jamboree time for many of the KingCo 3A and 4A teams. A couple 4A teams got a head start on things, opening their non-league slates on Friday. Season outlook: The Wolves must pitch well and defend to win.

Garfield Bulldogs
Head Coach:
Joe Lucia (3rd year)

2009 Summary: 3-13 KingCo (last in Crest), 4-16 overall
Returning starters: Jack Jajewski (Sr. - SS), Joseph Lucia (Sr. - C/2B/OF), Rubin Palmer (Jr. - OF), Peter Summerville (Sr. - C/1B/3B)

Season outlook: The Bulldogs have more talent in 2010 than they've had in the past four years. That combined with a strong coaching staff and improved practice facilities has Garfield thinking playoffs.

Issaquah Eagles
Head Coach:
Rob Reese(17th year, 281-117 career record)

2009 Summary: 8-8 KingCo (4th in Crest), 14-12 overall, T-5th in State
Returning starters: Marcus Gaan (Sr. - 3B), Grant Gellatly (Sr. - SS), Ethan Kalin (Soph. - P), Devin O'Donnell (Sr. - C), Mike Paulson (Sr. - 1B/P), Spencer Rogers (Sr. - OF/P), Gavin Schumaker (Jr. - 2B), Shane Yarnell (Sr. - P/1B)

Season outlook: Issaquah returns 5 pitchers, including all 3 starters from a State qualifier in 2009. Additionally, 6 of 8 position players return, along with senior Grant Gellatly, who returns after missing his entire junior year to injury. Good nucleus of returners, but will need to replace the offense provided by the 1, 2 and 4 hitters of last year's lineup, who were all lost to graduation.

Newport Knights
Head Coach:
Hal DeBerry (1st year)

2009 Summary: 9-7 KingCo (third in Crest), 16-9 overall, KingCo runner-up, 4th place State finish
Returning starters: Daniel Altchech (Jr. - C), Nick Clifford (Jr. - 1B), Jared Fisher (Jr. - P/1B), Victor King (Sr. - OF), Billy Sahlinger (Soph. - 2B), Trace Tam Sing (Sr. - SS), Cole Wiper (Jr. - P/UTIL)

Top newcomers:
Nate Anderson (Soph. - OF), Reid Dilley (Sr. - 3B), Joey Gale (Sr. - P), Kevin Martin (Jr. - OF), Dan Spray (Jr. - IF), Lee Stoops (Jr. - C)

Season outlook: The 2010 Knights return 10 letterman from their 4th place finish at State in '09. First year skipper Hal DeBerry takes over for Brian Fischer. The strength of the 2010 team will be the overall depth of the pitching staff. Jared Fisher, Cole Wiper, Jeff Gonzales and Erik Jensen all saw Varsity action last season. Newcomers Joey Gale and Billy Sahlinger round out the staff. Offensively, the team will be led by veterans Victor King and Washington State signee Trace Tam Sing. Defensively, Newport should be fairly solid up the middle, with returning starters Tam Sing and Sahlinger joined by catcher Daniel Altchech and new center fielder Nate Anderson.

Chad Hui-Peterson (Sr. - IF), Colin O'Brochta (Sr. - P/OF), T.J. Whidby (Jr. - P/IF)
Top newcomers:
Peter Hendron (Soph. - P/OF)

Season outlook: Redmond returns nine players from last year's Crest division championship team, and will look to build on that success. The hope is the Mustangs can take the next step and find themselves fighting their way out of KingCo and into the 4A State tournament.

Top newcomers: Dustin Doucette (Jr. - P), Emmett Maki (Jr. - P), Peter Meiusi (Jr. - IF/OF), Conor Savage (Jr. - IF/OF), Garrett Vandiver (Jr. - IF/OF)

Lake Washington Kangs
Head Coach:
Derek Bingham (6th year, 82-33 career record)

2009 Summary: 12-4 KingCo (1st in Crown), 19-6 overall record, KingCo 4A Champions, T-5th in 4A State tournament

Top newcomers: Theo Alexander (Soph. - OF), Bob Cruikshank (Jr. - SS/P), Phil Gray (Sr. - IF), Spencer Jackson (Jr. - IF/P), Zach Johnson (Soph. - P/1B), Kory Kohlwes (Jr. - OF), Chris Moore (Jr. - OF), Wesley Russell (Jr. - P/IF), Nori Shimizu (Jr. - P)

Season outlook: The Kangs lost 14 seniors from their '09 KingCo championship team, including 8 of 9 starters and their entire pitching rotation. A young and inexperienced team, Lake Washington will need its newcomers to step up to contend for another league title and a return trip to state.

Roosevelt Roughriders
Head Coach:
Jason Bowie (4th year)

Season outlook: Roosevelt lost 12 seniors from last year's club and will be a very young team with only two returning starters. Although a youthful bunch, they are looking to be competitive in the Crown division. Pitching will make or break the season for the 'Riders.

2009 Summary: 10-6 KingCo (T-2nd in Crown)
Returning starters: Jake Dammrose (Sr. - OF), Connor Jones (Sr. - P/IF), Dan McMillan (Sr. - 1B/DH), Matt Stefansson (Sr. - C), Luke Taylor (Sr. - P/IF)

Preparing for 2010

The long off-season is just about over, with baseball practice starting statewide next Monday, March 1st. 2009 was a banner year for the KingCo 4A conference, with three of its teams advancing to the state quarterfinals, including Newport who made the Safeco Field final four. The league should be strong again, as many underclassmen played starring roles on their teams a year ago.

KingCo league play kicks off on Tuesday, March 23rd with a full slate of games. Between now and then, the blog will feature team previews and preseason polls, as well as recap non-league games from around the conference. As it was in 2009, the KingCo baseball blog will be your place for the latest results, news and notes from around the league.

Good luck to all in 2010!
