The KingCo 3A/2A conference joined in on Major League Baseball's opening day festivities, with their first league games on Monday. Here's a look at the results from a full slate of action:
Bellevue 7, Sammamish 0 - Senior Nolan Watson struck out 14 Totems in a complete game shutout, as Bellevue opened league play with a 7-0 win over Sammamish. Watson threw just 89 pitches, allowing just two hits and a walk in his seven innings of work. The Wolverines were led offensively by junior Chandler Hawk, who had two hits, a double and two runs scored. Senior Reid Hartmann chipped in with 2 RBI.
Mount Si 9, Juanita 8 - Senior Joey Cotto's walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th propelled the Wildcats to a 9-8 win over Juanita. The Rebels had clawed back from a big deficit, scoring 2 runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to tie the game. However, the Wildcats would not be denied, with Cotto providing the game-winner. He finished the day 3-for-4, while junior Wyatt Baker-Jagla collected three hits as well. Tanner Simpson and Evan Johnson each had two RBI for Mt. Si. For the Rebels, senior outfielder Avery Britton was 2-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBI, while Lucas Van Heise was 3-for-5 in a losing effort.
LW 10, Mercer Island 4 - The Kangs pounded out 15 hits en route to a 10-4 win over Mercer Island. Junior shortstop Jordan LaFave led the attack, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. Seniors Alac Wong, Stevie Semler and Nick Johnson each had multi-hit games for the Kangs, who got five strong innings from freshman Connor Johnson, earning his first Varsity win. Brian Higgins doubled and drove in two for the Islanders.
Interlake 8, Liberty 3 - Interlake got a strong all-around performance in an 8-3 opening win over the Patriots. The Saints scored twice in the first and fourth inning and extended their lead with four more in the sixth. Senior Luke Oman and freshman Tyler Haselman each had two hits for Liberty in defeat.
